If you have ever sprayed a fragrance in the morning and found it gone by lunch, the problem is usually not the brand. It is the concentration. The words printed under a perfume name — extrait de parfum, eau de parfum, eau de toilette — describe how much aromatic oil is dissolved in the alcohol base. That single number decides how long the scent lasts, how loudly it projects, and how much you should expect to pay per millilitre.
What the concentration labels actually mean
- Extrait de parfum (parfum): roughly 20–40% fragrance oil. The richest, longest-lasting form. Often 8–12 hours on skin.
- Eau de parfum (EDP): roughly 15–20% oil. The modern everyday standard, typically 5–8 hours.
- Eau de toilette (EDT): roughly 5–15% oil. Fresher and lighter, usually 3–5 hours.
- Eau de cologne (EDC): roughly 2–5% oil. Bright and fleeting, often 2–3 hours.
The difference is not marketing. A higher oil load changes how the fragrance unfolds. In an extrait, the top notes are quieter and the base notes — the resins, woods, musks and ambers — dominate for hours. That is why extraits feel smoother, closer to the skin and far more persistent.
Why extrait lasts longer on skin
Fragrance evaporates at different speeds depending on molecule size. Light citrus and aromatic molecules leave quickly; heavier woody, resinous and musk molecules cling for hours. Because an extrait is built with a higher proportion of those heavier materials, it simply has more to evaporate over a longer window. It also sits closer to the skin, which means it releases more slowly rather than flashing off in the first hour.
Does higher concentration mean more value?
It usually does. You apply less, less often. A 50ML extrait at a fair price can easily outperform a cheaper 100ML eau de toilette, because you are buying oil rather than alcohol. When you compare prices, compare cost per wear, not cost per bottle.
A note on Pakistan's climate
